Brief synopsis of the film:

अवार-नवार छोरियां (Every Now and Then Girls…) is a hand drawn, hand cut stop motion animation which is an adaptation of the Rajasthani folktale ‘Dohri Joon’, collected by Vijaydan Detha in his 14 volumes of folktales from Rajasthan titled 'Batan Ri Phulwari'. Our screenplay adapts this folktale and locates it in a small town, Sheoganj, Rajasthan (which is my paternal hometown) to retell it in the contemporary time.

The film has three non-human narrators, the Tiddi (locust), Danda Thhor (a succulent plant) and Sarus crane. Each of the narrators tells the story of two girls. These stories revolve around oppressive patriarchal structures; the desire to challenge, change or leave behind these structures; friendships between women and the possibility of new imagined futures.

Taking a cue from the folktale form, the film makes use of non-linear storytelling and magic realism to unfold the three stories which are being told to a group of curious and giggly young girls.

A note of gratitude: There are so, so many people to thank, who have been an integral part of the making of this labour of love! My parents, without whom this film would not have been what it was - a warm intimate growing relationship with the people and the landscape of Sheoganj, my paternal hometown. My father's love and curiosity for, and observation of, the little details of land, flora, fauna, people, his memories of growing up in Sheoganj, his enthusiasm in visiting every little hill and shrine nearby and his taking me along with him on all his trips since my childhood, has greatly shaped my approach to art, storytelling and life. My mother's laughter and verve for life despite all the various challenges most women face, has fed my conviction to not dilute my own desires for, and expectation from, life and art. The people of Sheoganj, especially the women and children!! Ronak, the little DIY engineer (now quite grown up!) who knows every street and every 'happening' event, and all things trending in town! Kamala baisa and Raju ji who were full of stories and lore that opened up the place in all its layered social complexity; Reena didi and Vimla didi and their gang whose sharp Marwari tongues shared juicy gossip and spicy feminist humour alongside makai roti and bharvaan karela ! Neeraj didi, the self-made school teacher and her inspiring composed strength and quiet rage, which she put into the narrative voice for our film; Chandra ji and her knack for finding ways of living life at her own terms who brought her robust narrative voice in the film; the soft-spoken priest at the Dadawadi Jain temple who opened up histories of the place; the old rabadi couple, friends of my father, whose eyes lit up with love and tears, as they spoke fondly about their goats and sheep; the women in the kabirpanthi family who work hard at the anganwadi and additionally grow vegetables to make sure there is money to educate their daughters; the gang of little children, in the neighborhood where our family house is, in Sheoganj, who one can watch endlessly and learn from; my cousins- birders, gardeners, wildlife photographers, educators - with whom I have shared many past winters in Sheoganj. Old masters of hand cut, hand drawn animation whose films I steeped myself in, over and over, in the past 4 years, especially, in order to learn animation firsthand from them. Inspiring folk storytellers and writers and film makers who write women and landscape beautifully, powerfully and with humour - Ismat Chughtai, Ursula Le Guin, Vijaydan Detha, Marjane Satrapi, Arati Kumar-Rao and Agnes Varda among others... who have guided my hand in writing the screenplay. And last but not the least, so, so happy and grateful to Shivi Bhatnagar for coming on board with unmatched enthusiasm, as co-creator of this film. Our time together on this film has been the most valuable one, full of exchange of ideas and skills. Shivi brought her passion for lighting and camera, her meticulous and patient technical know-how and her untiring focus to this project helping bring the film alive in absolutely incredible ways!! But most of all we have loved traveling together for sound recording trips for this film, spending hours together, over the span of a year, shooting and re shooting scenes in a darkened room, sharing many many lunches between shoots, regularly putting out glimpses of our excitement on social media to share with everyone and finally screening the film for our friends and collaborators in Sheoganj! And the ultimate dream sound team led by Lokesh Khodke with Srinath ( Srinath S Kumar - Shinu )and Ayana Joe (Ayan Joe). The imaginative exploratory and sensitive sound that they have devised for this film gave it a texture and depth that blew Shivi and I over completely! It has also blown over many of our audiences who have not tired of telling us how incredibly powerful they found the sound of this film to be! And many many other friends who gave their voices, music, suggestions, love, support in various ways... Anand Shenoy , Gala Soler , Shikhant Sablania and many more! Thanks mrinalinimukherjee.foundation for supporting this project!
